Why isn't there a Mustang "gran coupe?"

The market for these things has exploded over the past few years. It all started with the original CLS (which I still prefer to the current generation). Then BMW came out with the 6 series GC, the A7 popped up too, and now you can even order a baby BMW 4 door coupe in the form of a 4 series GC.

So, why isn’t there a cheaper, performance-oriented version of this concept? That could sell pretty well, right? I think that the Mustang would be a perfect starting point. They could alter the styling a little and call it the Galaxie or something nostalgic like that. Offer the ecoboost and the V8. And PROFIT. Surely there’s a market for something like that - specifically, the group of people who like the dramatic roofline of a 4 door coupe but don’t want to pay more than 35K for it.

They did, it was called the Falcon and they didn’t sell it here.

Basically a smaller Dodge Charger/ SS.

Could work. The main problem with those two is they are too big.

Imagine the Police Grancoupe Mustang!

Because if they did make a RWD Gran Coupe it should be a Thunderbird. Just to screw with heads.

You know what the interior of the Mustang looks like and is made of, and you want to double it?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but they did offer a Thunderbird with 4 doors at one time. It would actually make a lot more sense then a 4 door mustang. A 4 door Mustang would screw with my head a lot more.

That’s exactly what I was alluding to. Bringing back the Thunderbird just to make it a four door would be a more effective and less declasse way to offer a BimmerBeater Gran Coupe, but at the same time would be a throwback to what’s pretty much the most forgotten Thunderbird of all and what some people consider to have been a betrayal. Kind of clever, but at the same time a more straight-jackety solution than the lazy (and stupid) option of putting four doors on a Mustang.

Yes. A friend has one from the early 1970s. It's massive. It's nothing like its predecessors.

Soon the crossovers will become lower, then longer. Ever so slowly we will return to Wagonland, but nobody but else will notice because they’re too busy reading dealer literature. Crossovers have won the battle, but the sheeple won't even realize that we will win the war.

BWAHAHA! also, yes. I agree. people wanted more room, so they created the wagon, they wanted more utility so they invented the SUV, people wanted more civility so they invented the crossover, people demand a more car like like crossover and BOOM...wagon.

Because the back seat in a Mustang isn’t worth spending money on doors for.

But seriously, the main reason why I couldn’t go for a Mustang as my DD and occasional family hauler is that the back seat head room is insanely bad. My ‘86 GT had more room.

If they made a 2 door notchback or shooting brake, I’d happily fight the car seat installation fight to be able to drive one.

I’ve been asking the same thing when I found out that the Mustang is a proprietary platform. It’s probably the reason that the Camaro stomps all over it because it shares it’s platform with the ATS and CTS, more uses for the chassis more money to spend on engineering.

I know the Falcon awesomely existed in Australia but not here. A four door Mustang should be Lincoln’s E-class fighter or something!

Bought it when I was a senior in highschool... 13 years ago. Sheesh that was a long time ago. It was a bit rough around the edges, but a great drive. I ended up selling it to a friend who still has it, so I drove it as recently as last year. I still think it’s the most fun car I’ve owned.

Do it. They’re possibly the easiest project car available and pretty reliable if you take care of them. Mine had 180k on it and I only needed to replace a TFI module and a fuel pump (Though I did replace much, much more.)

Just try to find one where the owner knew what they were doing with the mods, or has minor mods. There are far too many Foxes out there with too many problems.

Yeah most foxes on craigs are pretty rough and it’s already gotten to the point where clean low mileage examples are becoming expensive. the problem is that all of my favorite eighties stuff is like that right now. BMWs, Mercs, Jags... FML lol

I hear that. 80's cars are under appreciated. Clean lines, light weight, EFI, no electronic nannies... Power levels are a bit low, but that can be fixed.

There actually was a plan for that, way back in 1963. Iacocca saw the Mustang as a more stylish and profitable alternative to the Falcon, on the Falcon’s own platform, so doing a sedan version was a logical enough idea. A few years later, Ford did do the Thunderbird Landau sedan, so that’s definitely how the company thought at the time. The reason this wasn’t built was most likely because the 2-door coupe/convertible/fastback were such a staggering success right out of the gate, and Ford was using all the capacity they had just to meet that demand. Plus, the 4-door would have needed a lot more unique tooling.

Kinja'd!!!

I believe there was also some discussion in the mid to late 2000s around doing a big, RWD, sedan on the Mustang’s platform. It wouldn’t have really been a 4-door Mustang, just something Mustang based, but the idea didn’t go anywhere.
